In December 1973, a bank run scandal broke out at Toyokawa Shinkin Bank, a shinkin bank in Aichi Prefecture. It all started when a high school student joked with his friend, a high school girl who was going to be hired by the Toyokawa Shinkin Bank, that the bank was dangerous (because of robberies and such). That night, the high schol girl asked her relative if the Toyokawa Shinkin Bank was in financial danger. After that, the relative also asked his friends if Toyokawa Shinkin Bank was in danger, and rumors spread that the bank was in danger of running out of money. Over the next two weeks, approximately 1.4 billion yen in deposits were withdrawn. Toyokawa Shinkin almost went bankrupt as a result, but the bank survived the crisis by placing large amounts of cash near the bank counter where customers could see it, and by putting up signs that rather encouraged customers to withdraw their money.
